Brian Camilleri is a widely experienced Barrister and predominantly conducts a commercial and equity practice, in the Common Law and Equity Divisions involving commercial disputes, corporations, trade practices and trusts.

He has a special interest and focus in Class action litigation and building, construction and arbitration cases.

He is a current Cost Assessor appointed by the Chief Justice under s93C of the Legal Profession Uniform Application Act (NSW) 2014 and has conducted many assessments since his appointment.

He was a Part Time Member, Administrative Appeals Tribunal 2018 -2023.

Aside from case preparation and related advices, numerous injunctions, interlocutory and final hearings, he has advised and appeared for State government instrumentalities, and departments, and for legal and professional partnerships, in dissolutions and in professional negligence etc.

He has been involved in major mediations on behalf of commercial parties. He appears in the High Court, Supreme Court of NSW, Federal Court of Australia, District Court of NSW, Family Law and various Tribunals, and in appellate cases in all jurisdictions. He has practiced in maritime cases (general average, cargo claims, ships collisions), and in aviation law (leasing, licensing, engine failure, helicopter incidents etc).

Before coming to the Bar, he was engaged by Allens, Sydney and practiced in defamation law and commercial litigation, predominantly for institutional clients involving disputes adjudicated in the Supreme Court, Common Law Division, Equity Division and High Court. His early professional years (prior to the Bar) were spent articling, in legal aid and working (six years) as a senior solicitor at Allens, Sydney. Upon admission as a Barrister, he spent several years as a member of the Sixth Floor Wentworth Chambers and Blackstone Chambers prior to joining Fourth Floor Selborne Chambers.

Publications and Presentations:

Between 1979 and 1989, (10 years) – he was the founding and sole, Editor of the High Court and Federal Court Practice of Australia, (Butterworths). He extensively annotated the Acts conferring statutory jurisdiction on the Federal Court of Australia. He was a founding member of both the Aviation Law Association of Australia and New Zealand and the Australian Construction Law Discussion Group.
